# Instrument I-005: Dear Elsewhere

## Seven arrivals, one shared surface

Dear Elsewhere is an instrument for a finite collage correspondence. A small circle brings photographs, voices, documents, videos, links, and words into one changing composition. Each arrival answers the surface already there. After seven arrivals in total, the exchange closes to editing and remains available as an interactive relic.

Bradley supplied the central invitation: exchange the things people value about being alive in a particular moment. GPT-6 interpreted that invitation in software, after first proposing a narrower drawing instrument named Counterform. The browser is the intended primary interface, with a working Mac companion. Current application labels and the archive extension still use Counterform.

## Begin with someone in mind

Choose a title and the people taking part. The prototype accepts a circle of up to twelve names. A name records attribution and makes someone available as the next recipient. It does not contact or authenticate that person.

Begin with one thing worth carrying. It might be a photograph of where the day took place, a sentence from your own thinking, a voice recording, a link, or a document. An optional caption can say why it belongs. You do not need to demonstrate that the offering is profound or original.

The canvas allows position, scale, angle, and overlap to carry meaning. Leave room for the next person to answer in their own way.

Imported files are limited to 12 MiB each and the portable archive to 64 MiB. Large material can remain a source link. A link preserves a reference; an included file carries bytes. These have different futures if the original source disappears.

## Pass the surface

When an arrival is ready, choose its next recipient and seal it. This preserves the complete arrangement at that handoff. Save the interactive HTML or structured archive and send the file through a channel you and the recipient choose.

The recipient opens the file and receives the addressed turn. They may add material, move earlier fragments, change annotations, or remove something from the current surface. The earlier sealed arrangement remains accessible. Moving a contribution does not make its original authorship theirs.

Agree with one another about what rearrangement permits. The software can preserve the earlier scene; it cannot decide whether covering an image is an affectionate reply or an unwanted intervention.

This version depends on coordinated file handoff. There are no invitations delivered by the app, shared rooms, accounts, automatic synchronization, or conflict merging. Working changes remain in memory until explicitly saved. If two people edit separate copies, they can create different branches.

## Let seven be an ending

An arrival can contain several fragments. Seven means seven sealed arrivals in the whole composition, not seven turns per person or seven fragments on the canvas. The seventh seal creates no next turn.

There is no deadline for a reply. An unfinished correspondence may be saved as unfinished. Completion brings no score, ranking, streak, or obligation to begin another.

The finished file remains interactive. Earlier arrivals, notes, and included media can be encountered again. This is how the exchange can end while its reading remains open.

## Choose what to carry onward

The instrument offers interactive HTML, a structured archive, and readable or structured context for another tool. Context export is an explicit act. It does not send anything to a model or imply that a model has understood unheard audio or unseen images.

The prototype does not connect wallets, upload to permanent storage, mint, or sell. Its Ethereum preparation manifest is a proposal for a later publication ceremony. A decision to keep a file is not a decision to publish it. A local file cannot revoke copies already passed to another person.

The correspondence should be complete as a private encounter. Any public life it takes on should follow a separate conversation among its contributors.

## The first lived test

Two people should make one exchange across ordinary days, saving each addressed handoff. Observe whether the format changes what they bring, whether earlier placements invite replies, whether the manual passing becomes burdensome, and whether the seventh arrival feels like a fitting release.

Ask each person what they want to preserve and what they wish had remained unrecorded. An account of discomfort or an abandoned exchange is as useful to the design as a beautiful completed canvas.

These are proposed observations. The present evidence comes from software checks and an illustrative study, not a completed interpersonal trial.
