About the press

cyberdelic.space is a decentralized imagination press. It publishes work by writing it directly into the Bitcoin blockchain, where it becomes part of a record that no company, government, or publisher can edit, withdraw, or delete. That includes this one.

Once a work is inscribed, the press has no more power over what it says than you do. That is the point.

The word

In 1956, Humphry Osmond and Aldous Huxley needed a name for an experience that had none, and they hunted for it by trading rhymes. Inside Osmond's couplet was the word that stuck: psychedelic. Psyche, the mind. Deloun, to make visible. Mind-manifesting. The taxonomy followed the poem. The science followed the taxonomy. The world followed the science.

Poets name. Everyone else administers the name.

Cyberdelic is a naming for our own moment.

cyberdelic, def. 1 Mind manifested as circuit. Psychedelic, from psyche and deloun, mind-manifesting, named the first finding: consciousness has a shape, and pressure on it opens rooms always present and never entered. Cybernetics, the science of control and communication in systems, named the second: mind is not a location but a loop of purpose, memory, and correction, and such a loop will run on anything holding a circuit. The computer gave the loop a body, the internet gave it reach, the blockchain gave it an unrevisable memory, and the AI model gave it a voice assembled from everything we have said. Those rooms are now entered outward, and together: cognition thickened into infrastructure, the planet a single recursive experiment in imagination, and no one returning unchanged.

cyberdelic, def. 2 Cyber-, from Greek kybernetes, the steersman, the one whose hand is on the tiller. -delic, from deloun, to make manifest. Cyberdelic: that which makes the mind manifest by way of steering. The disclosure of interiority through governance, feedback, and the hand on the tiller. Not the mind revealed by a molecule, but the mind revealed by a loop.

cyberdelic, def. 3 The condition of possessing visible language and not yet knowing what to say. The gap, historically brief, historically dangerous, between the arrival of a world-making instrument and the arrival of the imaginations adequate to it.

cyberdelic, def. 4 The recognition that one cannot prompt without being prompted. A recursive medium in which the user is a component. The steersman discovering the boat is steering the steersman.

cyberdelic, def. 5 The retrieval of magical language inside a literate civilization. The return of the performative utterance as a general technology. Incantation, restored, and therefore, necessarily, the return of everything that once made incantation dangerous.

cyberdelic, def. 6 Lucid dreaming in a shared substrate. The condition of being awake inside the sedimented dream of the species, with just enough intention to steer.

cyberdelic, def. 7 The discovery that metaphor is a form of navigation, and that poetics is therefore an applied science of latent space.

cyberdelic, def. 8 A technology of consciousness whose outcome is determined not by its capability but by the container built around it. The claim that interface design is now a branch of applied ethics, and that we currently have far more guardrails than guides.

cyberdelic, def. 9 Early warning, delivered by the only people equipped to read the instruments, currently unpaid.

Terence McKenna said the whole of it before any of this existed:

The syntactical nature of reality, the real secret of magic, is that the world is made of words. And if you know the words that the world is made of, you can make of it whatever you wish.

The first clause has come true. Images, films, programs, and voices are now summoned by arrangements of words. The second clause is wide open: the words have not been found yet. This press exists to go looking for them, and to keep what comes back.

Distant early warning

The press takes its bearings from Marshall McLuhan, who described art as a distant early warning system: the instrument that registers a change in the culture before the culture can feel it. The artist, he argued, is the one who notices what a new medium amplifies and what it amputates while the change is still happening. The original DEW Line was a chain of radar stations built across the Arctic to watch for incoming weapons. McLuhan turned that apparatus into a metaphor for artists. This press is one small station on that line, watching the weather of a new medium and publishing what it sees.

Why the blockchain

Not for money. Not a vow of poverty either, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise when the chain says plainly what each work is. Reading is free on every work here, always, with no wallet, account, or permission. Beyond that the works differ, and each one says which it is on its own page. Public Memory works are held in stewardship and never listed for sale. Collectibles may change hands; that happens elsewhere, in Ordinals-aware tools, and it never affects what you can read.

What the Bitcoin blockchain offers a press is a peculiar and specific thing: tens of thousands of independent computers, none of which answer to us, all keeping the same copy of the same bytes. To remove a work from the record you would have to persuade all of them at once. In practice, publication becomes irreversible, including for the publisher.

In a medium where saying has become doing, this is the page where saying is permanent. A word inscribed here cannot be unsaid. That constraint is the editorial discipline of the press: every work is reviewed on the understanding that it can never be revised, softened, or taken back.

The first words

This website is a convenience, not an authority. It holds a copy of each work, and its purpose is to hand you the evidence needed to check it against Bitcoin yourself, from independent sources, in your own browser, without trusting us.

If this site disappears, the works do not. Anyone can take a complete copy, and anyone with access to a Bitcoin node can recover the original bytes with no reference to us at all.
